• Civilisation britannique 2h : « Eighteenth-Century Britain »

This course charts the history of Britain from the Glorious Revolution (1688) to the French Revolution, with a focus on continuity and change in British society in the eighteenth century. After looking at the Revolution Settlement and the constitutional stability which ensued, the course explores the political, economic and social transformation of Great Britain, paying particular attention to the development of the public sphere, the agrarian, commercial and financial ‘revolutions’ and the early stages of the Industrial Revolution, the radical movement and the impact of the French Revolution, the emergence of a fiscal-military state, the loss of the first British Empire, the beginnings of the second Empire and its role alongside religion in the forging of a British national identity.

Ce cours poursuit l’étude de l’histoire des États-Unis engagée au semestre précédent et porte sur la construction de la jeune nation étatsunienne entre 1787 et 1865, depuis la rédaction de la Constitution fédérale jusqu'à la guerre de Sécession, au prisme des dynamiques de démocratisation et d'exclusion qui jalonnent cette période fondatrice.

This source-based course builds on the reading skills acquired in the first semester and aims to develop students’ ability to analyse and critically assess primary and secondary sources. It introduces students to historiography, drawing attention to the Whig interpretation of history and its teleological narrative, to the works of revisionist historians and to periodization.

Sur le plan des connaissances, ce cours a pour objectif de sensibiliser aux grands enjeux de la période concernée. Au-delà des connaissances historiques, cet enseignement vise également à consolider la méthodologie du commentaire de texte historique, à entraîner à la pratique de la lecture suivie et à initier à la réflexion historiographique. Les objectifs sont les suivants :
•    Construire des repères historiques.
•    Analyser et comprendre un document historique.
•    Synthétiser ses connaissances.
•    Consolider l’expression écrite en anglais.

Formule standard session 1 - Contrôle continu : un devoir écrit de 2h à mi-parcours (commentaire de document historique) 40%, un devoir écrit de 2h en fin de semestre (commentaire de document historique) 50%, participation (préparation de textes, fiches de lecture, prise de parole, etc. tout au long du semestre) 10%.
