Realisme et Modernisme / Realism & Modernism (responsable Mme PAQUET-DEYRIS)

Ce cours abordera les littératures britannique et américaine du 19ème et du début du 20ème siècles. Du côté britannique, il étudiera le mouvement du Réalisme à travers le roman de Charles Dickens, Great Expectations (1861) et son articulation dans le contexte historique et socio-économique bien particulier des révolutions industrielle et politique et d’expansion de l'empire colonial. Du côté américain, il se concentrera sur un roman urbain, Passing de Nella Larsen (1929), qui mobilise à la fois des questions de genre, d’identité et d’inégalités raciales. Les deux romans ont fait l’objet d’adaptations filmiques qui pourront être évoquées en classe. 

This course will explore 19th century and early twentieth century British and American literatures. On the British side, it will focus on the Realistic movement and its connection with a specific socio-historical context of the industrial and political revolutions, as well as the expansion of the colonial empire in Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations (1861). On the American side, it will examine an urban novel entitled Passing (1929), a Naturalist urban novel taking place in New York and more specifically Harlem at the time of the Harlem Renaissance and the intellectual and cultural revival of African-American art forms. Nella Larsen was a central figure of the Renaissance and portrayed Black women coming to terms with their identities in a changing world. The novel raises gender, race and identity issues. Both novels have been adapted for the screen which may be evoked in class.

En écho aux nombreuses études sur le genre appliquées à la littérature, ce cours veut revisiter la question de la construction des genres et de leurs subversions dans la littérature anglo-saxonne. Ainsi on explorera comment se représentent les genres à la fois dans la trame d’une fiction et à travers des personnages, comment ces représentations du masculin et du féminin peuvent venir corroborer ou remettre en cause le contrôle social notamment à travers leur peinture subversive ou le travestissement.

In the wake of the numerous forms of gender studies applied to literature, this course aims at revisiting the construction and deconstruction of gender in British and American literature. We will study how gender is represented, be it in plot or characterization, as well as how gendered representations abide by, or question, social control, especially through subversion in its various forms, among them cross-dressing.

Initiation des étudiants de deuxième année aux problématiques des théories sur le genre appliquées au genre dramatique et romanesque. Travail d’analyse d’un texte littéraire sous un angle à la fois esthétique, historique et philosophique.
